An avatar is the icon or picture that appears below your user name. You can pick one from the vast library in your UserCP or use a custom one by purchasing a subscriber account.
Avatars are 32x32 pixels in size.
There was a brief protest movement to highlight avatar theft where several boards users switched their avatar to the Unabomber one. The only thing it really highlighted was people who like to jump on bandwagons.
