A Super Moderator was a Moderator that had to do more work, read more posts, and put up with more abuse than a normal Moderator.
The term is now defunct, and the category is now extinct. Super Moderators (or SMods) were made Administrators in 2009, since they were basically admins in all but name.
History
The Administrators, recognising their small number and the increasing amount of work being demanded of them, saw the need for Moderators with more powers quite early on. In early 2005, Category Moderators were added. However, these Moderators still had a quite a limited scope, and often a spammer would break out on one category where the Cat. Mod. wasn't available, while other Cat. Mods. looked on in vain.
The Admins initally appointed six Super Moderators to join the already existing one, Lucutus - Beruthiel, Gordon, sceptre, seamus, Talliesin and Trojan. Asok, hullaballoo and then Ruu were later added to give them a hand. Talliesin later retired, feeling he wasn't on boards regularly enough to continue doing the job. Super Moderators had the ability to moderate any forum on boards.ie with the exception of Private Forums of which they are not a member, and could ban users from the entire site. They also had the ability to view information which other Moderators could not, such as users' email addresses, IP addresses, and other profile information. Super Mods were denoted by four yellow stars.
All the Super Moderators also had normal moderator duties in one or more forums. Outside of those forums they generally did not get involved in matters that would be dealt with by the moderators of those forums unless requested to help or the relevant moderators were likely to be absent for some time. Rather, Super Moderators dealt with matters that affected the site as a whole.
Duties
Duties were:
- Fill in for other moderators when requested
- Moderate threads which were in breach of the general rules of boards - spam, porn, etc
- Ban users who started the above mentioned threads.
- Resolve/Escalate Help Desk tickets
- Any other requests which they had the ability to carry out.
Super moderators also had tools to help deal with muppet/spam attacks in such a way that basically allowed them to contain and log the attackers while having no adverse effects to normal users on the boards.
